Publié à l’origine en 1983 par Jonathan Cape, Byker de Sirkka‐Liisa Konttinen est reconnu comme une œuvre phare et un classique moderne de la photographie. Konttinen a documenté une communauté très unie à Newcastle dans une zone qui a été son lieu de vie pendant sept ans et qui était destinée à un grand réaménagement. L’œuvre a acquis une reconnaissance nationale en tant que récit photographique clé d’une riche culture ouvrière à la veille de sa destruction. Le livre a été sélectionné par The Observer comme l’un des dix meilleurs livres de l’année.
Sirkka‐Liisa Konttinen est une photographe et cinéaste d’origine finlandaise et membre fondatrice de l’Amber Film & Photography Collective et de la Side Photographic Gallery basée à Newcastle upon Tyne. Avec Byker, ses autres projets à long terme dans la photographie et le cinéma incluent Writing in the Sand, Letters to Katja, The Coal Coast, Song For Billy, Byker Revisited, Today I’m With You et Still Here. En 2011, la photographie de Konttinen et les films d’Amber ont été inscrits au Registre de la Mémoire du monde de l’UNESCO au Royaume-Uni comme étant d’une valeur et d’une importance nationales exceptionnelles pour le Royaume-Uni.
 
“Une époque de l’histoire sociale est capturée dans ces images qui reflètent les conséquences pour une communauté alors que toute sa raison d’être – les travaux d’ingénierie et les chantiers navals – est lentement démantelée. Mais l’attachement aux lieux qui ont été le lieu de la lutte, de l’amour et de la souffrance n’est pas l’amour de la brique et de la pierre et de la pauvreté, mais une mesure de l’intensité de ce que les gens ressentaient les uns pour les autres ici…..
