La photographe allemande Ilse Bing (1899-1998) s’est imposée comme l’une des photographes majeures du XXe siècle. Ses images pionnières de l’entre-deux-guerres révèlent une vision moderne influencée à la fois par l’impact du Bauhaus et du surréalisme. Parallèlement à son travail personnel, elle a produit des images dans les domaines du photojournalisme, de la photographie d’architecture, de la publicité et de la mode, et son travail a été publié dans les grands magazines de l’époque et exposé en France et en Allemagne. Elle a déménagé de Francfort à Paris en 1931, mais lorsque la ville a été prise par les Allemands pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle et son mari, tous deux juifs, ont été expulsés et internés dans le sud de la France. Ils ont émigré à New York en 1941 et elle y a vécu jusqu’à sa mort en 1998.
Depuis les années 1970, date à laquelle elle a exposé pour la première fois au MOMA de New York, l’intérêt pour son travail et, plus généralement, pour la photographie européenne des années 1920 et 1930 a explosé. En tant que l’une des principales forces créatives de l’époque, Bing est devenue conférencière fréquemment invitée à parler sur la photographie de cette époque et sur le développement de l’art moderne.
Ce livre, publié en association avec la Fundacion MAPFRE, coïncide avec une rétrospective complète de son travail présentée à Madrid par MAPFRE de septembre 2022 à janvier 2023. Le livre propose une étude chronologique et thématique de son intense carrière créative et comprend plus de 160 photographies comme ainsi que des textes d’éminents experts Juan Vicente Aliaga, Benjamin Buchloh et Donna West Brett.
