For L’Œil de la Photographie, les livres photographiques comptent autant qu’une exposition ou un portfolio. Ils font l’histoire et l’actualité du médium. Notre correspondante Zoé Isle de Beauchaine porte un regard inlassablement curieux et averti sur les dernières parutions.
Avec Notre pain quotidien, les éditions September Books and Lalie Thébault Maviel publient une encyclopédie singulière, consacrée à l’histoire du pain, sa présence dans nos vies et ses évolutions économiques, sociales, politiques et esthétiques.
Du pétrissage de la pâte en Égypte antique à des clichés d’influenceuses portant une baguette, en passant par un extrait de Chaplin qui enfourne son pain dans Charlot mitron ou une sculpture surréaliste de Dalí : Notre pain quotidien renferme près de 800 images collectées depuis plusieurs années par Lalie Thébault Maviel, photographe dont la pratique, centrée sur l’image et l’édition, se rattache autant à l’anthropologie qu’à l’archéologie et s’intéresse aux problématiques de subsistance.
Organisé par planches thématiques, l’ouvrage, réalisé en collaboration avec la graphiste Ninon Chaboud, raconte une histoire « lacunaire et subjective » du pain à travers des photographies documentaires, publicitaires ou techniques, des coupures de journaux ou encore des images issues de notre culture populaire, films, arts visuels, internet, mode…
Aucun texte ne perturbe cette accumulation visuelle, mis à part un marque page parsemé de citations sur le pain qui aux yeux de Lalie Thébault Maviel fonctionnent « comme des impulsions de lecture offrant de possibles visions du pain, sans pour autant enfermer le livre dans un seul sens de lecture. »
Partant du blé et de la préparation du levain, l’ouvrage culmine vers une exploration de la force symbolique du pain. De la guerre des farines en 1775 à l’envolée du prix du blé depuis l’invasion de l’Ukraine, le pain est un indicateur de stabilité économique, politique et sociale. Les slogans des planches regroupant des affiches de propagande en témoignent : « pain cher: politique de guerre » ; « économisez le pain : coupez-le en tranches minces » ou encore « moins de blé = moins de pain : qu’attendez-vous pour réagir ».
Entre analyse anthropologique et critique sociale, Notre pain quotidien est une traversée insolite dans l’histoire du pain et de nos sociétés.
