The book is surprising. Its title: Embrace. Its author : Rohina Hoffman.
Isolated and locked in her Los Angeles home during covid confinement, Rohina Hoffman embarks on a metaphorical journey to connect her roots to food through the rituals of the daily meal.
For Hoffman, photographing family members holding dinner ingredients became a tool for expressing a new, deep gratitude for food. She often thought of all the effort and hands that had touched the product before it ended up in her family. Food also became the means to connect with family members and reconnect with her Indian roots in a deeper way. As part of the 1.5/1.75 generation (a term coined by Professor Ruben Rumbaut in 1969 to distinguish those who immigrate as children from their parents who immigrate as adults), Hoffman struggled with identity issues and a sense of "otherness".
Photographs of food and family are seasoned with Hoffman's poetry. Her essay, "Not All Peacocks are Blue", published in English and Hindi, delves deeper into the photographer's journey and serves as a bridge between the two projects. Embrace is a visual examination of how life's simple pleasures expand the quality of human existence, and how this expansion helps an individual secure his or her identity isolated within the confines of her Los Angeles home during covid confinement, Rohina Hoffman undertakes a metaphorical journey to connect her roots to food through the rituals of daily meals. In Embrace, she combines two photographic projects. In Gratitude presents the food she used to prepare for her family's dinners. Generation 1.75 is a visual memoir of identity, belonging and the complexities of acculturation.
"The world begins at the kitchen table. No matter what, we must eat to live. The gifts of the earth are brought and prepared, put on the table. It has been this way since creation, and it will continue. This is where we chase chickens and dogs away from the table, where babies teethe and scrape their knees, where children are instructed in what it means to be human. This is where we make men. This is where we make women." - Joy Harjo
